Low back pain is one of the most common health complaints in the United States, and for the hundreds of thousands of people who work and live in downtown Chicago it is practically an occupational hazard.

Long hours at a desk, long commutes, and the physical demands of an active urban lifestyle create the ideal conditions for low back pain to develop, persist, and become a recurring part of daily life. If you have been dealing with it, you already know how much it gets in the way.

The good news is that the majority of low back pain cases respond well to conservative chiropractic care. Surgery and long-term medication dependence are not the inevitable outcome for most patients, and the research supporting chiropractic as a first-line treatment for low back pain has grown substantially over the past two decades.

How a Downtown Chicago Chiropractor Can Help with Low Back Pain

Why Low Back Pain Is So Common in the Loop

The Chicago Loop is one of the densest concentrations of office workers in the country. Most of them spend the majority of their workday sitting, which is one of the worst things the lumbar spine has to endure on a sustained basis.

Prolonged sitting compresses the lumbar discs, tightens the hip flexors and hamstrings, and creates muscular imbalances that place uneven stress on the spine. Poor workstation ergonomics compound the problem. Add in the stress of a demanding work environment and the occasional physical demand the body is not prepared for, and low back pain becomes almost predictable.

For patients who also commute by train or bus, the combination of sitting, standing on a crowded platform, and carrying a bag on one shoulder adds another layer of mechanical stress to an already overloaded lumbar spine.

What Is Actually Causing Your Low Back Pain

Low back pain rarely has a single cause. In most cases it involves a combination of factors that have been building over time. The most common underlying causes include restricted or misaligned vertebral segments in the lumbar spine, herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc changes, muscle spasm and tightness, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and hip and pelvic imbalances. In many patients several of these are present simultaneously.

This is why a thorough examination before treatment begins matters. Treating low back pain without an accurate diagnosis is guesswork, and guesswork produces inconsistent results.

How Chiropractic Care Addresses Low Back Pain

At Loop Spine & Sports Center, low back pain is treated with a combination of approaches tailored to what the examination finds. The foundation of care for most patients is diversified spinal adjusting, which addresses restricted and misaligned vertebral segments throughout the lumbar spine and pelvis. For disc-related conditions, lumbar flexion distraction and pelvic drop technique are used to gently decompress the affected segments. Spinal decompression therapy is added for cases involving significant disc herniation or degeneration.

Massage therapy is a central part of low back pain treatment here. The muscular component of low back pain is significant and often undertreated in practices that focus exclusively on adjusting. Deep tissue massage targeting the paraspinal muscles, hip rotators, glutes, and surrounding soft tissue addresses the soft tissue side of the problem in a way that adjusting alone cannot. Most low back pain patients receive both chiropractic adjusting and massage therapy on their regular visits and respond significantly better than with either approach alone.

Custom foot orthotics are also frequently part of the treatment plan when foot and lower extremity mechanics are contributing to lumbar stress, which is more common than most patients expect.

What to Expect When You Come In

Your first visit at Loop Spine & Sports Center begins with a thorough consultation and examination. Dr. Trottier will review your history, perform orthopedic and neurological testing, and take digital x-rays if clinically indicated. He will explain what he found and what he recommends before any treatment begins. In most cases treatment starts the same day.

Most patients with acute low back pain begin to notice improvement within the first few visits. Chronic conditions that have been present for months or years typically require a more consistent treatment schedule over the first several weeks before meaningful progress is established.
