If you have never been to a chiropractor before, not knowing what to expect can be enough to keep you from making the call. That is understandable. Walking into any new healthcare setting for the first time involves a certain amount of uncertainty, and chiropractic has enough myths and misconceptions attached to it that first-time patients often arrive with questions they are not sure how to ask.
This post is meant to clear that up. Here is exactly what happens when you come to Loop Spine & Sports Center for the first time.

Before You Arrive
If you scheduled through Zocdoc or by calling or texting our office, you will receive a confirmation with your appointment details. You can complete your new patient intake form online before your visit if you would like to get a head start, or you can complete it when you arrive. Either way works.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows reasonable access to your spine and the area you are being treated for. You do not need to bring a change of clothes. If you are coming from work in business attire that is fine. Bring your insurance card and a photo ID, and if you have any relevant imaging such as MRI reports or x-rays, bring those as well.
When You Arrive
Our office is located on the sixth floor of 30 N. Michigan Ave. at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Washington Street. Take the elevator to the sixth floor and Suite 605 is on your right. You will be greeted by Monica, our office manager, who will get you checked in and answer any questions you have before your appointment begins.
If you are driving, we offer parking validation at the Millennium Garages Grant Park North Garage at 25 N. Michigan Ave., directly in front of our building. With validation your parking drops to just $14 for up to 12 hours.
The Consultation
Your appointment begins with a thorough consultation with Dr. Trottier. He will ask about your current symptoms, how long you have had them, what makes them better or worse, and what you have already tried. He will also review your general health history and any relevant medical background. This conversation is not rushed. Understanding what is going on and how it is affecting your daily life shapes everything that follows.
The Examination
After the consultation Dr. Trottier will perform a complete physical examination of the spine and the area relevant to your symptoms. This includes orthopedic and neurological testing to assess range of motion, joint function, muscle strength, and nerve involvement. If digital x-rays are clinically indicated they will be taken in office during the same visit using our on-site digital x-ray system.
Once the examination is complete Dr. Trottier will review his findings with you in plain language. You will understand what he found, what he thinks is causing your symptoms, what he recommends, and why. There is no confusing jargon and no pressure to commit to anything before you have a clear picture of the plan.
Treatment on Your First Visit
In most cases treatment begins the same day. You will not be asked to come back for a separate report of findings appointment or wait until your next visit to start care. If chiropractic is appropriate for your condition, Dr. Trottier gets started that day.
For most patients the first treatment includes chiropractic adjusting of the spine and any relevant extremity joints. Depending on your condition and what is scheduled for that visit, it may also include massage therapy, electrical stimulation, or other modalities as part of your treatment plan.
How Long Will It Take
Most first visits take approximately one hour from arrival to completion, depending on the complexity of your case and whether massage therapy is included. Follow-up visits are typically shorter since the consultation and examination components are complete.
What Happens After Your First Visit
Before you leave, Dr. Trottier will give you a clear picture of what your treatment plan looks like going forward. How often he recommends you come in, what the initial phase of care involves, and what realistic improvement looks like for your specific condition. You will know what to expect before you walk out the door.
Some patients experience mild soreness after their first adjustment, similar to how muscles feel after starting a new exercise routine. This is normal and typically resolves within a day or two. Most patients notice some degree of improvement after their first visit, though for chronic conditions meaningful progress builds over the first several visits as the spine and surrounding tissue responds to care.
