Chiropractic Adjustments in Chicago

Hands-On Spinal Care from an Experienced Chicago Chiropractor

At Loop Spine & Sports Center, chiropractic adjusting is the foundation of care for nearly every patient who walks through the door.

Dr. Trottier has been performing hands-on spinal adjustments in the Chicago area since 1996, and his approach has remained consistent throughout: find out exactly what is going on, match the technique to the condition, and treat it effectively from the first visit.

What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled, targeted force applied to a specific spinal segment or joint with the goal of restoring proper motion, reducing nerve irritation, and relieving pain.

When vertebrae become restricted or misaligned, the surrounding muscles tighten, normal movement is compromised, and the nerves that pass through or near those segments can become irritated. An adjustment addresses that mechanical problem directly rather than masking the symptom.

Most patients feel some degree of relief after their first adjustment. For others, particularly those dealing with chronic conditions or significant disc involvement, improvement builds progressively over the first several visits as the spine responds to care and the surrounding soft tissue begins to loosen and heal.

The Technique Dr. Trottier Uses

Dr. Trottier's primary adjusting technique is diversified spinal adjusting, a manual, hands-on method that addresses restricted and misaligned vertebral segments throughout the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.

Most patients receive full spine adjusting, meaning the entire spine is evaluated and treated during each visit rather than focusing exclusively on the area that hurts. Spinal problems rarely exist in isolation, and treating the full spine produces more consistent and lasting results.

For patients with low back and disc-related conditions, spinal adjusting is typically combined with lumbar flexion distraction and pelvic drop technique. These approaches apply a gentler, more controlled force to the lumbar spine and are particularly effective for patients with disc herniations, degenerative disc disease, or sciatica who may not be candidates for more forceful manipulation.

Approximately five to ten percent of patients also receive extremity adjusting of the wrist, knee, or ankle when those joints are contributing to their overall condition. Dr. Trottier evaluates each patient individually and adjusts his approach based on examination findings and clinical response, not a predetermined protocol.

What to Expect

Your first visit begins with a thorough consultation and examination. Dr. Trottier will review your history, perform orthopedic and neurological testing, and take digital x-rays if clinically indicated. He will explain what he found and what he recommends before any treatment begins. In most cases, your first adjustment happens the same day.

Subsequent visits are efficient and focused. Most patients are in and out within a reasonable timeframe, receiving chiropractic adjusting along with whatever additional modalities their treatment plan calls for, whether that is massage therapy, spinal decompression, electrical stimulation, or a combination of these.
