Therapeutic ultrasound is a treatment modality that uses sound waves at a frequency above the range of human hearing to deliver energy deep into soft tissue. Unlike diagnostic ultrasound, which is used for imaging, therapeutic ultrasound is used to produce physiological changes in tissue that reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and support healing.
At Loop Spine & Sports Center it is used selectively for conditions where soft tissue inflammation and fibrosis are a primary component of the problem.

How It Works
A small handheld transducer is applied to the skin over the affected area using a conductive gel. The sound waves penetrate the skin and underlying tissue, producing two primary effects. The thermal effect gently heats the deep tissue, increasing blood flow, relaxing muscle tension, and improving tissue extensibility.
The mechanical effect, known as cavitation, creates microscopic pressure changes in the tissue fluid that can help break down scar tissue, reduce inflammation, and accelerate cellular repair. The treatment is painless and most patients feel only a mild warming sensation during the session.
When Therapeutic Ultrasound Is Used
Therapeutic ultrasound is used at Loop Spine & Sports Center primarily for tendinitis conditions and areas of chronic soft tissue inflammation that have not responded fully to adjusting and massage alone.
Common applications include:
-
Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow
-
Wrist and Forearm Tendinitis
-
Shoulder Tendinitis and Rotator Cuff Irritation
-
Knee Tendinitis
-
Ankle and Foot Tendinitis Including Plantar Fasciitis
-
Areas of Chronic Scar Tissue or Soft Tissue Fibrosis
It is not used routinely for every patient. Dr. Trottier applies it when the clinical picture specifically calls for it, particularly when a tendinitis or inflammatory soft tissue condition is part of the presentation alongside or independent of spinal complaints.
How It Fits Into Your Care
Like electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound at Loop Spine & Sports Center is a supporting modality rather than a primary treatment. It works best as part of a comprehensive plan that addresses both the soft tissue condition and any related spinal or joint components. For patients dealing with tendinitis alongside neck, back, or extremity pain, combining ultrasound with chiropractic adjusting and massage therapy typically produces better results than any single approach on its own.
New patients are welcome and can take advantage of our $75 first visit special, which includes a thorough consultation, complete spinal examination, digital x-rays if needed, and a report of findings. No pressure, no obligation. Just an honest conversation about what is going on and whether we can help.
Loop Spine & Sports Center is located at 30 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 605 in the heart of the Chicago Loop, steps from Millennium Park and accessible from every CTA train line.
