Neck pain is the second most common condition we treat at Loop Spine & Sports Center, and it is remarkably prevalent among the working professional population that makes up the majority of our patient base. Long hours at a desk, prolonged screen time, poor workstation ergonomics, and the cumulative physical and mental stress of a demanding work life create the ideal conditions for cervical spine problems to develop and persist.

For many patients neck pain starts as occasional stiffness or tension that is easy to dismiss. Over time it becomes a constant presence that affects concentration, sleep, productivity, and quality of life. By the time most patients come in they have been managing it on their own for longer than they should have.

Why Neck Pain Develops

The cervical spine is a remarkably mobile structure that supports the weight of the head and allows for a wide range of movement in multiple directions. That mobility comes with a trade-off. The cervical spine is also vulnerable to the cumulative effects of poor posture, repetitive strain, and prolonged positioning in ways that create significant mechanical stress on the joints, discs, and surrounding musculature.

The most common underlying causes of neck pain we find during examination include restricted and misaligned cervical vertebrae, muscle tension and trigger points in the cervical and upper thoracic musculature, cervical disc involvement with or without radiating symptoms into the arms, and postural imbalances that place chronic stress on the neck and upper back. In many patients several of these are present at the same time, which is why a thorough examination before treatment begins matters as much as it does.

How Neck Pain Travels

Neck pain rarely stays in the neck. Restricted segments in the cervical spine can refer pain and tension into the upper back and shoulders, contribute to headaches that originate at the base of the skull and travel forward, and in cases involving disc or nerve root irritation, send radiating symptoms down into the arms and hands. Patients who come in for headaches often discover that their neck is the primary driver. Patients who come in for shoulder pain frequently find that the cervical spine is contributing more than they realized.

Treating neck pain effectively means understanding the full picture rather than focusing exclusively on the area that hurts.

How We Treat Neck Pain

At Loop Spine & Sports Center neck pain is treated with hands-on cervical and thoracic chiropractic adjusting tailored to each patient's comfort level and clinical presentation. Dr. Trottier takes a careful approach with cervical adjusting, particularly for patients who are new to chiropractic care or who have significant disc involvement. The technique and force used are matched to what the examination findings and patient comfort indicate, not applied uniformly to every patient.

Massage therapy plays a central role in neck pain treatment here. The muscular component of cervical pain is significant and often the primary driver of day to day discomfort. Deep tissue work targeting the cervical and upper thoracic musculature, suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull, and the muscles of the shoulder girdle addresses the soft tissue side of the problem in a way that adjusting alone cannot. Most neck pain patients receive both adjusting and massage on their regular visits and respond significantly better than with either approach alone.

For patients with cervical disc involvement and radiating arm symptoms, treatment is modified accordingly and may include additional modalities to address the nerve irritation component.

What to Expect

Most patients with acute neck pain begin to notice improvement within the first few visits. Chronic neck pain that has been present for months or years typically requires a more consistent treatment schedule before meaningful progress is established. Dr. Trottier will give you a realistic picture of what to expect based on your specific presentation and how long your symptoms have been present.
