What Is a Herniated Disc?
The discs of the spine sit between the vertebrae and serve as shock absorbers, allowing the spine to move, flex, and absorb the demands of daily life. Each disc has a tough outer layer called the annulus fibrosus and a soft gel-like center called the nucleus pulposus. A herniation occurs when the outer layer develops a tear or weakness and the inner material pushes through, pressing against the surrounding nerve tissue.
The result depends on where the herniation occurs and which structures it is affecting. In the lumbar spine a herniated disc most commonly causes low back pain combined with radiating pain, numbness, or tingling down one or both legs, the condition known as sciatica. In the cervical spine a herniated disc can cause neck pain combined with radiating symptoms into the shoulder, arm, or hand.

Is Chiropractic Care Right for Your Herniated Disc?
